“Spider-Samurai”: Miles Morales Creates His Own Identity Apart From Peter Parker

Miles Morales is in the best position in the world, despite the fact that the Spider-Man brand is often plagued with a string of misfortunes. He has acquired new abilities, he is more self-assured than he has ever been, and he has accepted the guidance of some of Marvel’s most talented and accomplished individuals. In point of fact, Miles is performing so well that he is setting the framework for the possibility of leaving the life of Spider-Man behind and claiming his own identity.

As part of the “Gang War” arc, Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022) #13 is written by Cody Ziglar, Federico Vicentini, and Bryan Valenza. This issue finds Miles in the middle of things, having to defend himself from Frost Pharaoh as well as Bumbler and Vespa’s “Buzz Boys” gang, which is themed around bees. After being besieged by Bumbler’s forces, Miles uses his newly acquired venom-saber skills to terrify them. He does this by recalling his training with Misty Knight and Colleen Wing.

In spite of the fact that Miles asserts during his training that he is “really not trying to be a Spider-Samurai or anything,” his newly acquired proficiency with the blade begs to be disregarded. Following a brief battle, Miles demonstrates some genuinely excellent swordsmanship by slaying Bumbler and Vespa.

In order to “do his own thing” apart from the Parker legacy, Miles is prepared to do so.
Throughout the whole of Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022), the focus is placed on Miles’ newly discovered progress as he acquires new mentors, powers, and technical abilities. He is being schooled by Misty Knight in both investigative technique and fieldwork by the time issue #2 arrives; issues #10-12 find him joining up with Blade for Vampire Hunting 101 (in addition to getting a horrific new appearance).

Miles has been working on his mental health with Dr. Sasquatch and Kesiha Kwan during this entire process, which has resulted in him being significantly more self-assured and able to articulate what it is that he desires without hesitation. According to Zeb Wells, Cody Ziglar, Cody Vazquez, and Julian Shaw’s The Amazing Spider-Man: Gang War: First Strike (2023) #1, as compared to Miles, Peter Parker has simply disappeared from Miles’ life for the past six months. This is a truth that his colleague Spider-Man correctly criticizes him for.

The cumulative effect of all of this helps to emphasize the reality that Miles is no longer dependent on Peter. Miles is currently in a more secure position in his life than he has ever been, and as a result of this stability, he has at long last been able to begin exploring new identities for himself.

Miles has demonstrated that he is almost ready to claim his own identity outside of the mantle of Spider-Man, and by extension, outside of Peter’s shadow. This is despite the fact that it is possible that he will not end up becoming a Spider-Hunter or Spider-Samurai.

The identity of Miles is rightfully his to claim.

Even while Miles will forever be associated with Spider-Man, his present actions indicate that he will have a constantly developing identity in the years to come. Since Miles became the face of the Spider-Verse in 2018, the concept of having the ability to select one’s own identity has expanded to become an essential component of his narrative. Miles Morales looks to be more prepared than ever before to make those decisions for himself, regardless of whether or not those decisions involve Peter Parker’s Spider-Man at all. This is the case now more than ever before.
