Interim head coach Antonio Pierce still has a chance to become the full-time head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, but he may have to compete against a strong hitter.
The squad has been linked to Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh since last year's coaching search.
Though the team elected to go with Josh McDaniels last year, Harbaugh is still an option. Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda shed some light on the relationship between owner Mark Davis and Harbaugh.
"Our sources say Jim Harbaugh and Mark Davis have had a very good relationship for a while now, and the Raiders would be a natural fit, but several factors come into play," Pauline wrote in her column on November 30, 2013.
"First and foremost is the current administration of Champ Kelly and Antonio Pierce. Some in the league feel Davis will keep Kelly and Pierce if the club finishes well.
As reported in this article dated November 4, there is a surge of support for Kelly within the Raiders organization."
While Harbaugh's links to the Raiders make him an obvious candidate (he was the team's quarterbacks coach from 2002 to 2003), Pauline brought out one thing that would sway Davis away from him but did reveal that the franchise is interested."
There's also the question of Davis being comfortable with the head coach once again being in full control," Pauline stated in an email. "It didn't work out for the Josh McDaniels-Dave Ziegler team, and Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock had a difficult time with personnel."
