The Padres update Manny Machado.

According to Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press, veteran third baseman Manny Machado of the Padres underwent surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday to repair the extensor tendon.

Dr. Neal ElAttrache carried out the operation. The recovery period for Machado is anticipated to last between four and six months; if it ends sooner,

he could be ready for spring training; if it ends later, he could be ready to return soon after Opening Day.

Of course, if spring training is missed, he would still need to build up from that point. The information wasn't particularly shocking ,

because Machado has previously stated that elbow surgery was in his near future.

The 30-year-old Machado had a somewhat dismal season, slashing.258/.319/.462 with a wRC+ of 114 in 601 at-bats.

After an outstanding 2023 in which he recorded a staggering 7.5 fWAR and came in second to Paul Goldschmidt in the NL MVP voting,

Machado was generally anticipated to exercise his option to leave his contract this summer and look for work elsewhere. I'd rather not take a chance on that.
