Cam Newton’s Impact on the NFL World referring to Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy as “Game Managers”
Cam Newton recently made news for referring to several of the top NFL quarterbacks in the MVP race as “game managers” on a recent episode of his weekly “4th&1” podcast.

Newton minimized the importance of a few quarterbacks on their teams’ performance, notably Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy.
Newton’s talk about “game managers” came late in the December 6 edition of his podcast, as part of a section outlining his Super Bowl choices as well as his frontrunners for the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

Newton named Christian McCaffery the frontrunner for the honor, citing his significant impact on the San Francisco 49ers, prompting him to explain why he did not place Purdy higher on the list.
“Brock, they’re not winning because of him,” Newton explained on the program. “He’s in charge of the game.” As game managers, we may put that in its own category. This may ruffle a few feathers, but it’s true. Tua Tagovailoa, Brock Purdy, Jak Goffm, and, really, Dak Prescott. “These are game managers, not game changers.”

Newton went on to call McCaffery, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, and Tyreek Hill true “difference-makers.”
He went on to say that the players he referred to as game managers may still win the award, but they don’t regularly impact the game in the same manner that the difference-makers do throughout the season.

“If we’re going to call a spade a spade, there’s a difference between managers of the game and difference-makers of a game,” stated Newton. “That’s not to say they can’t win MVP, but it is what it is.” If I were to pick a game manager to win the MVP award, it would have to be Jared Goff because he means so much to the Detroit Lions.”

Newton’s statements enraged supporters of the 49ers and Cowboys, among others, due to his criticisms of their quarterbacks. One San Francisco fan questioned Newton’s claim that the 49ers don’t need to consistently lead scoring drives, pointing out that the Purdy-led offense is “one of the most efficient and highest scoring offenses” in the league.

Newton’s remarks on Prescott, in particular, garnered ire from some, including FoxSports’ Jason McIntyre, who appeared on Tuesday’s broadcast of Colin Cowherd’s “The Herd” to explain why he disagreed with Newton’s assessment of Prescott.

In the process, McIntyre mocked Newton’s NFL career.
“Cam Newton, you had a worse career than Dak Prescott,” McIntyre remarked. “Obviously, Cam won an MVP and went to a Super Bowl, but Dak Prescott — the numbers don’t lie.” … [Newton’s] peak was spectacular; his peak was enormous. However, if you look at Dak Prescott’s history, you’ll notice that he’s had a better, more consistent [career] than Cam Newton. You won’t be great until you’re consistent.”

Prescott is presently fourth in the NFL in passing yards this season with 3,505 yards, while Purdy is third with 3,553 yards and Tagovailoa leads with 3,697 yards. Goff is sixth with 3,449 yards, while Mahomes is eighth (3,398).

Ultimately, despite of Newton’s feelings, Tagovailoa, Prescott, and Purdy appear to be among the likely frontrunners for the MVP award.

Cam Newton recently came under fire when he said that multiple NFL MVP candidates were “game-managers.”

The 2015 NFL MVP said that Dak Prescott, Brock Purdy, Tua Tagovailoa and Jared Goff, all of whom lead their respective divisions, are “game-managers.”

“They’re not difference-makers,” Newton said earlier this week. “[They’re being asked] not to lose. . . .I don’t give a damn what you do. You don’t have to score every time. You just don’t have to throw a pick every time either. If we’re going to call a spade a spade, a game-manager is different than a game-changer.”

The term often has bleak undertones, but Newton disagrees.

“Game-changer and game-manager is not something where I’m saying this person is not physically capable of making some great plays. I’m not saying that, or I am not saying that they’re not good players.”

Despite that compliment, though, he noted that those four quarterbacks have had help in being successful due to their surrounding talent.

“[Purdy’s] putting it in guys’ (hands) like Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey. That’s my point,” he said.
